It's important to have a general understanding of the basic steps involved in acquiring adequate skills. This module will cover the basic steps in problem-solving and some proven techniques to efficiently and effectively solve your organization's safety management system challenges.

Solving Safety Problems

Solving safety-related problems centers on two key strategies:

  1. Solving surface-cause problems: Eliminating or reducing unique hazardous conditions and unsafe work behaviors that represent the surface causes of accidents.
  2. Solving root-cause problems: Improving inadequate or missing safety and health programs, policies, plans, processes, procedures, and practices that represent the root causes contributing to hazardous conditions and unsafe behaviors.
