Program Development

There are several recommended ways to judge the quality and suitability of employee health and safety training.

There are many ways to evaluate the effectiveness of training.

When assessing the training program's effectiveness, consider the curriculum development, instructor training, distribution of course materials, and direct student training. Below are some questions that should be considered as well.

  • Duration and frequency of training: Is the training too short, just right, or too long? Is it conducted at the right times and often enough?
  • Course content: Is the amount of content too little, just right, or too much?
  • Training requirements for different groups: Does the plan include training for both management and employees?
  • Process for developing curriculum: Does it have proper technical input, external review, evaluation, and pretesting?
  • Use of hands-on, demonstration, and instruction methods: Are all students practicing dangerous procedures during training? This is essential for OSHA compliance when teaching hazardous methods.
  • Adequate monitoring: Is the ratio of trainers to students appropriate, and is the learning environment safe?
