Purpose of the Standard

The purpose of the HCS is to ensure:

  1. The hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are classified.
  2. Information about the classified hazards is transmitted to employers and employees.

Information about the hazards of classified chemicals are transmitted using four strategies.

Classifying, transmitting, and communicating information about chemical hazards and the appropriate use of protective measures include the following:

  1. Developing and maintaining a comprehensive written hazard communication program
  2. Using container labeling and other forms of warning
  3. Maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  4. Developing and implementing information and training programs
