Hazard Classification

Requirements for chemical manufacturers, distributors, and importers are different than those for employers who only use manufactured chemicals.

The employer must review chemicals in the workplace for hazard classes.

Chemical manufacturers and importers must evaluate each chemical they produce in their workplace or import to classify the chemicals.

They must consult:

  1. 1910.1200, Appendix A, to classify health hazards
  2. Appendix B to classify physical hazards

Employers are generally not required to classify chemicals. The only exception to this is if the employer chooses not to rely on the classifications performed by the chemical manufacturer or importer for the chemical.
