Educate "why"

The first three topics in the list in the previous section describe what PPE to use, when to use it, and how to use it.

Knowing why PPE is necessary is critical.

However, it's just as important to explain why using PPE is important as it is to show how to use it. If we skip explaining the reasons, we risk making the training less effective in the long run.

The goal of the training is to increase both knowledge and skill so that the employee is better able to properly use the PPE. The methods used to train the employee are primarily discussion and demonstration. The best way to measure employee knowledge and skills is to have the employee explain how to use the PPE while demonstrating how to use it.

Employees are taught why PPE is important by explaining the natural and system consequences.

  • The natural consequences of noncompliance include some form of injury or illness.
  • The system consequences of noncompliance include discipline.

The goal of explaining why is to increase employee motivation to use PPE properly.
