Miscellaneous Aids
Miscellaneous aids do not give complete protection from machine hazards, but may provide the operator with an extra margin of safety.
Barriers
Awareness barriers do not provide physical protection, but serve only to remind a person that they are approaching the danger area.
Barriers are not adequate when continual exposure to hazards exists. The image shows a rope used as an awareness barrier on the rear of a power squaring shear.
Although the barrier does not physically prevent a person from entering the danger area, it calls attention to it.
For an employee to enter the employee must either intentionally reach or step over, under or through the barrier.
Shields
Shields are a common safety device used in manufacturing and industrial settings to protect workers from hazardous machinery.
They are typically made of durable materials such as steel, polycarbonate or other plastics and are designed to cover the moving or rotating parts of a machine that may pose a risk to workers.
