14-8. General Requirements.
Material Handling
- Refer to chapter 5 for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Use material handling devices according to the manufacturer's instructions for activity needs.
- Assess material handling requirements based on weight, size, distance, and movement path, prioritizing engineering solutions, mechanical devices, and manual means with handling aids.
Safe Material Movement
- Avoid moving or suspending materials above personnel without protective measures against falling objects.
- Utilize taglines or nonconductive devices for hazardous hoisted material movement near energized lines and avoid using banding as rigging for hoisting loads.
- Ensure safety of all persons during loading or unloading of materials from transport vehicles.
Material Hoists
- Follow ANSI A10.5 standards for material hoists construction, excluding temporarily used permanent elevators, and provide the operating manual onsite.
- Obtain manufacturer-certified replacement parts and follow manufacturer's instructions for maintenance and repairs.
- Ensure landing platforms, runways, and hoist way entrances meet safety standards for load support, slip resistance, overhead protection, and barricading.
Hoisting Operations
- Check rope seating in sheaves and drums after slack line conditions and prohibit riding on non-personnel hoists.
- Do not operate more than one cage or bucket at the same time by any one hoisting machine or operator.
- Post operating rules, including signal systems and line speeds, at the operator's station and on the hoist, with clear notices against riding.
- Connect air-powered hoists to adequate air supply and secure pneumatic hoses to prevent accidental disconnection.
