14-8. General Requirements.
Material Storage Guidelines
- Securely stack and stabilize materials, ensuring they are safe from sliding or collapse, with heights as low as practical and in no case higher than 20 feet unless otherwise specified.
- Protect materials susceptible to damage by the elements through adequate covering or indoor storage.
- Position materials away from operational, power line, and construction areas to prevent obstruction and ensure safety.
Specific Storage Requirements
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions and specific chapters in the manual for storing hazardous materials, gas cylinders, and materials sensitive to environmental conditions.
- Ensure clear access by keeping storage areas free from materials and obstructions, and restrict unauthorized access.
- Adhere to load limits when storing materials on scaffolds, platforms, or runways and maintain safety distances from hoist-ways, floor openings, and exterior walls.
Storage of Specific Materials
- Store lumber, bagged materials, bricks, blocks, and reinforcing or structural steel in specified manners, ensuring stability and adhering to height restrictions.
- For cylindrical materials, stack and block securely to prevent tilting or spreading and unload safely to avoid hazards.
- Store flammable or paint-soiled materials, and temporary enclosures with care, using flame-resistant containers or coverings.
