Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In 2019, U.S. hospitals recorded 221,400 work-related injuries and illnesses, a rate of 5.5 work-related injuries and illnesses for every 100 full-time employees. This is almost twice the rate for private industry as a whole.

Healthcare workers are often exposed to serious hazards, such as lifting and moving patients, needlesticks, slips, trips, and falls, and the potential for agitated or combative patients or visitors. Caregivers feel an ethical duty to "do no harm" to patients, and many will put their own safety and health at risk to help a patient.

When an employee is injured, hospitals incur costs for workers' compensation, temporary staffing, overtime, turnover, and reduced productivity and morale due to staff fatigue.

Injured caregivers increase risks of patient falls, fractures, bruises, and infections. Caregiver fatigue and stress also lead to more medication errors. OSHA training for healthcare professionals helps lower injury and illness rates, reducing costs, enhancing morale, improving patient care, and minimizing facility liabilities.
