Do Training Certificates Expire?
Program Certificates
Program certificates do not expire.
An OSHAcademy program is a series of related courses that focus on an overarching topic in safety and health. Upon successfully completing a program, you're awarded a program certificate that never expires. This certificate serves as enduring evidence of your accomplishment, signifying your comprehensive understanding of the range of topics covered within the program.
Course Certificates
Select course certificates require annual retraining.
Compared to our program certificates that never expire, the validity period for individual course certificates at OSHAcademy can differ. While the majority of our courses (163 in total) offer certificates that remain valid indefinitely, there are a select few (12 courses) that focus on topics OSHA specifies for annual retraining. For these specific courses, the certificate will come with an expiration date to comply with OSHA's annual training guidelines, helping ensure you stay updated with current industry standards.

An OSHAcademy expired certificate:
- Indicates that the certificate has reached the end of its validity period and is no longer an active proof of training.
- Applies to topics that require annual retraining as mandated by OSHA.
- Serves as a record of your successful completion of the training course in the past.
- Will still appear on your training transcript for your records.
The expired certificate is not valid for meeting current training requirements but remains a part of your training history.
OSHA mandates annual retraining to:
- Update employees on changing regulations and standards.
- Help maintain skills and knowledge over time.
- Reinforce the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
- Help employees identify new hazards that may have emerged.
- Reduce the likelihood of workplace accidents.
This helps employees stay current and competent in workplace safety procedures.
You generally only need to retake the training if you meet one of the following conditions:
- Your employer mandates it.
- A union or professional association you belong to requires it.
- It's needed for continuing education credits.
- You wish to update your resume (CV) with current qualifications.
Retaking the training is conditional based on these specific requirements.
You only need to purchase a new certificate if you need official documentation to satisfy one of the retraining conditions mentioned earlier.
Yes, your program certificate remains valid and is still recognized, even if the expired course is part of the program.
