6-8. General Requirements.

Asbestos and Lead Hazard Control

  • Do not use or bring known friable Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) onto USACE projects.
  • Evaluate construction or maintenance projects for potential contact with ACM, and develop an Asbestos Management Plan if there's potential for disturbance.
  • Label all ACMs and provide a site map indicating the location of asbestos hazards if labeling is not possible.

Lead Hazard Control

  • Use lead-based paints only with prior written approval and never inside residences or medical facilities.
  • Evaluate projects for potential occupational lead hazard exposure and develop a written Lead Compliance Plan if exposure is likely.
  • Label all lead sources that may generate occupational exposure, or provide a site map indicating the location of lead hazards if labeling is not feasible.

Protection from Hot Substances

  • Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is evaluated for efficiency in hot atmospheres and protects from heat and chemical hazards.
  • Consider heat stress precautions and relocate ventilation intake air vents away from where hot substances are heated.
  • Do not carry hot substances up or down ladders and ensure containers for transporting hot substances are of substantial construction.

Protection from Harmful Plants, Animals, and Insects

  • Wear appropriate PPE, treat clothing with DEET or Permethrin, and drain or spray insect breeding areas.
  • In areas with exposure to venomous snakes or lizards, ensure PPE such as snake chaps or knee-high snake boots are worn.
  • For exposure to poisonous plants, remove or destroy plants where practicable, provide appropriate protective clothing, and ensure soap and water are available for washing.
