Education and Training
Note: The information in this module provides guidance for the company planning group. It is not technical information for professional investigators; nor is it a summary of fact-finding or investigating procedures.
Rather, it is intended to provide the company planning group with a general overview of fact-finding/investigating considerations. It is also important to note this section discusses investigations that are administrative inquiries as distinct from criminal investigations.
Three components of VPP education
Educating employees about components of the VPP is accomplished through: instruction, training, and evaluation to ensure employees have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to work safe on the job.
- Instruction. To give employees the required knowledge, they must be instructed on OSHA regulations, the VPP, and other company safety policies, programs, and procedures.
- Training. To gain the skills necessary to perform VPP responsibilities, they must be involved in hands-on demonstration and given an opportunity to practice scenarios.
- Evaluation. Employee abilities to perform their VPP responsibilities on the job should be evaluated by a competent person, formally certified, and if required, designated as qualified to perform procedures.
Effective education through the application of each of the components above is necessary for employees, supervisors, and the staff members of each department who may be involved in responding to an incident of workplace violence to gain the KSAs to fulfill their VPP responsibilities.
