Determining the methods and materials for the learning activity can be as varied as your imagination and available resources will allow.

In achieving that goal, what the student does is more important than what the trainer does. A few factors will help to determine the type of learning activity to incorporate into the training. No matter where and when the learning activities take place, make sure you include these common factors when designing learning activities:

  • Make sure they are planned in advance
  • Learning activities are a part of each unit of the training
  • Activities must help assure training outcomes
  • The students must all be doing something, actively engaged in learning
  • The activities must ensure feedback about student performance is provided

These factors, and others will influence the type of learning activity designed. General safety instruction activities may be group-oriented, including lectures, role-play and demonstrations; or designed for the individual as with online self-paced instruction. However, technical safety training of hazardous procedures and practices like using fall protection, lockout-tagout, and using power tools must include hands-on practice in the learning environment.

Remember, if you want students to be able to do something, you must make sure that you train them how to do it, especially when skill will be tested. Determining the methods and materials for the learning activity can be as varied as your imagination and available resources will allow.
