Restaurant Industry Safety

Restaurants and other eating and drinking businesses employ 11.6 million people in the United States. About 30% of these employees are less than 20 years of age. There were 151 fatalities in the restaurant industry in 2019 and for every 100 employees there were 3.0 non-fatal injuries.

The United States has more of its youth in the workforce than any other developed country in the world. Young workers in the restaurant industry suffer a disproportionate share of injuries and fatalities, especially in the first year on the job. In 2017, 22 youths under 18 died from work-related injuries and another 27,070 were sickened or injured. The service industry ranks highest among US industries for injury in workers ages 16-19.

There is a clear need for employees working in restaurants to receive safety training to help ensure they can safely perform their work duties.
